Last Chance To Submit Entry For Premier’S Spirit Of Anzac Prize Year nine and ten students with a passion for history and a thirst for knowledge have one week left to enter the 2013-14 Premier‟s Spirit of Anzac Prize for their chance to participate in an overseas study tour. By Russell Northe - 10th October 2013 - Back to News Member for Morwell Russell Northe and Minister for Veterans‟ Affairs Hugh Delahunty visited St Paul‟s Anglican Grammar School in Traralgon today to talk to students about the Prize.
Mr Northe said 12 student places were up for grabs in 2013-14, two more than in previous years.
"The Premier‟s Spirit of Anzac Prize Tour is a once in a lifetime opportunity for year nine and ten school students to learn about our war history," Mr Northe said.
"Twelve students will visit Gallipoli and the Western Front and, for the first time, Lemnos in Greece. Lemnos served as the main base for the Gallipoli campaign, with more than 50,000 Australian soldiers and 100 Australian nurses spending time on the island.
"In addition, the 16 regional finalists will participate in a study tour to Canberra and secondary school teachers can also apply to travel as chaperones."
Mr Northe said that entries must address the following topic: To what extent is the Anzac spirit relevant to life in Australia today? What can it teach us about the Australia we want for the future?
"Students can find ideas and inspiration from the diary entries of previous recipients on the Premier‟s Spirit of Anzac Prize tour „blog," Mr Northe said.
"Understanding Australia‟s contribution to the war effort gives us a greater understanding about our state and national history and how Victoria came to be all that it is today."
Mr Northe said that in its nine year history the competition had received nearly 1,700 entries and announced 89 winners from across Victoria.
"Previously Bayley Charalambous a year 10 student from Lavalla Catholic College was awarded the Spirit of Anzac Prize," Mr Northe said.
Winners have visited battlefields at locations including Gallipoli in Turkey, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Greece and Crete.
The closing date for entries is 18 October 2013.
