Simply Shoes of Wonthaggi has won the overall prize for the Shire’s Best Dressed Business Competition – scoring two tickets to the 2006 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony.

The competition was held as a part of Council’s Commonwealth Games celebrations, in conjunction with Lombard the Paper People.

Business windows and shops were judged on the best Games decorations, with winners announced for each major locality as well as an overall winner.

All winners were presented with a framed Commonwealth Games Poster and merchandise kit at the Queen’s Baton Relay celebrations on the Cowes Foreshore on 1 March.

The locality winners are as follows:

Cowes and Surrounds – Cowes Sports Store, Cowes

Grantville and Surrounds – Island Views First National Real Estate, Grantville

Inverloch and Surrounds – Inverloch Holiday Park, Inverloch

San Remo and Surrounds – Phillip Island Nature Park - Penguin Parade Gift Shop, Ventnor

Wonthaggi and Surrounds – Simply Shoes, Wonthaggi

The judges also felt the clients at Moonya in Wonthaggi deserved special recognition for their enthusiasm and creativity and presented the group with an Encouragement Award.

"The impact of the displays was excellent," said Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin.

"All displays added to the Commonwealth Games atmosphere while the Queen’s Baton Relay was in our community."

"On behalf of Council and Lombard the Paper People, I would like thank all those businesses that participated in the event," Cr Goodwin continued.

"The time and effort businesses put into decorating their windows and stores gets more impressive each year."

The overall winner, Lynne Hanley from Simply Shoes, incorporated the Best Dressed Business Display Kit into her display and was able to demonstrate a strong link between her business and the theme of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, said Cr Goodwin.

"Lynne’s use of the Games colours was both creative and original – her shop display signs and table covers were all in the Games theme colours.

"The display draws your attention into the store, which is the aim of window dressing, to entice a window shopper into the store and become a potential customer," Cr Goodwin admired.
