Diving in for New Swim Facilities in Bairnsdale

Local families and swimmers will soon enjoy new swim facility in Bairnsdale

By news@gippsland - 29th April 2018 - Back to News

Work has begun on a major upgrade of the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre, which will give local families and swimmers the facilities they deserve.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing turned the first sod at the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre today, made possible thanks to a $3 million grant from the Andrews Labor Government.

It is the busiest centre in East Gippsland with around a quarter of a million visitors each year.

However, while the crèche, gym and group fitness facilities have received upgrades since the centre’s opening in 1995, the aquatic section has remained the same.

Works will include an upgrade of the existing 25 metre lap pool, the construction of a warm water pool, interactive children’s pools, four new change rooms, an accessible spa and sauna, and an expanded community space.

The warm water facility will respond to growing demand for warm water activities and therapeutic exercise opportunities.

The new facility will benefit the entire East Gippsland area, catering for all ages, and will support local sporting clubs including the Waterdragons Swim Club, Riviera Triathlon Club and Gippsland Swimming Club.

The new and improved centre is expected be completed in mid-2019.

Ms Shing acknowledged project partner East Gippsland Shire Council for its commitment to improving the centre, as well as its significant $3.4 million financial contribution to the project.

"This project will deliver the people of East Gippsland a modern, clean, safe, and accessible centre where they can go to exercise and have fun."
