Latest News• Add My News • Search Old News Gippsland › Latest news › Gippsland Portal Local NewsRaymond Island Ferry Toll Raymond Island Ferry Residents group joins Craig Ingram MP to fight Ferry Toll Raymond Island Ferry A delegation of Raymond Island Residents is joining Craig Ingram MP in a meeting today with the Shire of East Gippsland to discuss removal of the Ferry Toll. Alternative funding options will be discussed with the most feasible being the re classification of the Ferry as a tourist road therefore attracting state government funds through VicRoads. All Rate payers in the Shire have been funding the ferry since 1995. The ferry was free for 100 years before the Kennett Government started selling many of the State's assets. Raymond Island residents pay double and triple in cases where they require services or their families and friends wish to visit. Raymond Island is a recognised tourist destination and widely publicised as being famous for its Koalas. Traffic volumes bear this out, with 210.000 vehicles and 435.000 pedestrians using the ferry last year. The Bairnsdale Ð Paynesville Road is already a declared tourist road so it seems logical to extend the funding a further 200 metres to included the Island. Mr Kieth Hayes, convenor of the Raymond Island working group, said that this situation can not continue - no where else in the state do residents pay to access their homes where there is no other alternative route and no where in the state do ratepayers contribute to the fundinfg of a tourist road.Source: http://gippsland.com/ Published by: currawong27@optusnet.com.au
