Schoolkids tap into Tammy’s water wisdomWorld-beating marathon swimmer Tammy van Wisse told 590 local schoolchildren that being a water champion was vital for all our futures. By Susan Webster - 1st November 2007 - Back to News "Save water, keep it as clean as possible and we’ll all be looking at a better future," she told local children gathered as part of National Water Week activities.
The world-record holder was making a return visit to attend the annual two-day event jointly organised by Westernport Water and South Gippsland Water on the Inverloch foreshore last Tuesday and Wednesday.
Children from Cowes and Powlett River Primary Schools, as well as the entire school population from Bass Valley Primary School accepted the invitation of a free day of water-based activities.
They watched a performance on sustainable living by the theatrical troupe Vox Bandicoot, undertook an environmental survey on the foreshore and learned about the importance of water conservation through a variety of games.
"The children finished the day with a good grasp of some basic water-saving messages," said Westernport Water General Manager David Mawer. "We are entrusting them with the task of reminding their parents that water conservation starts with the simple things … fixing dripping taps, taking four-minute showers and only running a full dishwasher or washing machine."
Several teachers asked for copies of a free Westernport Water education kit on water conservation. These are available for other schools. Phone 5956 4140 or email swebster@westernportwater.com.au
