Volunteers Get Busy PlantingThe cooler weather over the weekend didn’t deter the Cape Paterson Residents and Ratepayers Association who got busy for their last planting day of the season. By Bass Coast - 15th July 2011 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Coast and Bushland Coordinator, Derek Hibbert, said that the volunteer group along with other local volunteers met at the Cape Paterson Surf Life saving club at 9.30am on Saturday, 9 July.
"This is one of our largest and most active groups and they had a clear goal in mind," said Mr Hibbert.
"The volunteers planted 400 indigenous plants at a number of sites in Cape Paterson, including near the Surf Life Saving Club, along Surf Beach Road and Alan Birt Reserve.
"This is quite an amazing achievement, and goes along way in making our coastline protected as well as beautiful."
"So far this season volunteers have planted over 10,000 plants along our foreshores. The Cape Paterson Residents and Ratepayers Association have planted 2,500 this year.
"The volunteers even had some time at the end of the planting to do some maintenance of last year’s planting," said Mr Hibbert.
"To make sure the volunteers kept up their strength, a morning tea and barbeque lunch was provided.
"We also provided the volunteers with tools, gloves and plants for the days work."
Volunteer groups work on coastal reserves right across Bass Coast. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer in your area, please contact the Environment Team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
