Extensive programme to replace and refurbish public toilets

Wellington Shire Council is undertaking an extensive programme to replace or refurbish nineteen toilet blocks, in direct response to community needs and feedback.

By Wellington Shire Council - 7th July 2003 - Back to News

The action forms part of the Council’s Toilet Development & Management Strategy which has recently been formally adopted. This document went out to community consultation earlier in the year and looks at all 46 toilet sites presently managed by the Shire – considering their future use and management through to 2010.

New toilets have been installed in Heyfield, with toilet blocks incorporating disabled facilities now under construction at Golden Beach and Woodside and due to be completed by the end of July.

Loch Sport and Dargo stand to benefit from new facilities in this financial year.

Meanwhile nine toilet blocks are to be removed, after an exhaustive study into their condition, level of use and proximity to other facilities showed that maintaining them could no longer be justified.

Wellington’s Mayor John Jago said: "This strategy is invaluable to help us monitor, maintain and enhance our existing public toilet facilities. By defining our ongoing responsibilities and priorities for action, we can manage these assets in a sustainable way in the future.

"Input from the public over the last four months has been of great value, and we have noted concerns and comments made. The end result is a strategy which reflects a partnership between Council and its community.

"Public toilets are of great importance, especially in a large Shire such as Wellington. The condition of them says a great deal about us, particularly to tourists. We want to be able to offer them clean and safe facilities so that our image remains a positive one."

"I am confident we are now in a position to greatly enhance the toilet facilities we offer."
