Improve Energy Efficiency And Save Money This WinterIf so, Bass Coast Shire Council and the Bass Coast Landcare Network’s upcoming ‘Future Homes Program’ workshop is for you.
By Bass Coast - 10th July 2014 - Back to News Held on Wednesday, 23 July, ‘Improving Your Home Energy Efficiency – Saving Money And Staying Warm In Winter’ is designed to educate on ways to reduce energy bills by changing practices and ‘retrofitting’ or designing your home with energy efficiency in mind.
Free to all Bass Coast residents, the workshop will run from 10.00am until 3.00pm at the Inverloch Hub Meeting room.
A presentation by Brad Shone from the Energy Innovation Cooperative will go through a number of options including how to use the Home Energy Audit Toolkit (available to borrow for free through our local libraries).
These kits enable you to find out how much energy you and your family use around the home.
Information sheets and the equipment in this kit will help you understand why you pay as much as you do for electricity, but more importantly will help you in making decisions that could save you hundreds of dollars each year.
The average Victorian household uses around 10,000kWh of electricity per year.
On present prices, this costs around $2,000 for electricity, as well as $300 in fixed charges.
It should be possible to cut your electricity use by around 25 per cent, giving potential savings of more than $500 every year.
If you are already very careful about how you use electricity, this workshop may give you the extra tips you need to improve your comfort levels without using more electricity.
Particpants on the day will also go through a simple self assessment of how energy is used at home, giving clear ideas of the options for reductions.
Couple this with borrowing one of the Home Energy Audit Kits from local libraries and you will be well on the way to feeling warmer in winter and keeping the costs of electicity bills down.

The ‘Future Homes Program’ of workshops to be held across Bass Coast Shire in 2014 is designed to inform and inspire you to implement sustainable actions at home.
This can save you money and increase the resillience of your home against impacts of climate change.
The remaining workshops in this program will include expert speakers, products, techniques and tours of sustainable sites to show real world examples of exceptional homes, gardens, farms and communities. Information provided will help you to save money by using energy and water efficiently, reduce waste and live sustainably.
