Community Newsletter Wilsons Prom Fire 12/02/2009 - 1000Hrs

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 13th February 2009 - Back to News

Fire situation

An 8.00 am fire observation flight reported no active fire with only a few wisps of smoke on the northern edge. The Cathedral Range fire has not increased in size over the last 12 hours.

Weather

A shower or two this morning with winds east to southeast throughout the day increasing to 35 km/h this afternoon, and tending southeast.

Forward weather analysis across the state indicates next Wednesday onwards could bring an elevated fire danger with hot northerly winds forecast. This, combined with predicted thunderstorms and associated lightning strikes from Monday may add to the fire burden across the state.

Community meeting last night

Over 200 local residents attended a community meeting at the Yanakie Hall last night.

Fire operations staff discussed their plan to provide forward protection for residents north of Wilsons Promontory through three planned burns ahead of the Cathedral Range fire, creating a blackened band across the Yanakie Isthmus.

Crew tactics

With overnight and continuing rain in the north of the Prom the first planned burn, at Millers Landing, may not occur. This morning fire crews will measure vegetation moisture content to determine if the burn would achieve desired results given current conditions.

Other crews are working to prepare containment lines for a planned burn in an area west of the Vereker Range.

The Incident Management Team at Tidal River has put in a request for water bombing aircraft to focus on the southern edge of the fire, which now approaches Sealers beach.
