Latrobe Leisure Moe/Newborough Urgent Pool Closure

Latrobe Leisure Moe/Newborough indoor pool will be closed from 20 January for 4-6 weeks in order for urgent works to be undertaken.

By Latrobe City - 12th January 2012 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council’s general manager, recreation, culture and community infrastructure, Grantley Switzer explained that significant leaking in the pipe work underneath the indoor pool has been detected and needs to be repaired urgently.

"It is extremely difficult to detect a leak in the underground plumbing but we recently noticed an increase in water usage. A pressure test was then carried out on the plumbing and it was found that there were leaks somewhere within the system, and due to the age and nature of the plumbing system, it is impossible to determine where these leaks are," Mr Switzer explained.

"The Moe Newborough pool was built in 1976 and unlike newer pools that have underground plumbing ducts that are accessible in a custom built cavity underneath the pool; Moe/Newborough’s plumbing is buried under the pool and concourse. This means access to the pipes at Moe Newborough can only be achieved through the removal of the pool deck/concourse.

"We are fortunate that the works will be undertaken during the summer and for those residents in the western part of Latrobe City access to the outdoor pools at Moe and Yallourn North will be available.

"This will be the first occasion since 2003 that the pool has been closed to the public, this provides a unique opportunity for Latrobe City Council to undertake some much needed maintenance tasks at the same time," Mr Switzer said.

Other maintenance tasks to be carried out while the pool is closed for plumbing works:

  • Painting of the structural beams in the pool hall;
  • Replacement of some windows in the pool hall with louver style windows to provide some summer ventilation;
  • Upgrading of the seating in the pool hall;
  • Replacement of the filter sand;
  • Replacement of the floor grating in the plant room; and
  • Replacement / upgrading of pool signage to meet current standards.

Works will commence on January 19 and it is expected that the works will be completed within a 4-6 week period.

During this time, the pool will be closed to patrons however the rest of the centre will remain open for business as usual.
