Mr Northe said the grants, of up to $10,000 each, will make a significant difference to the local sporting clubs.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe congratulated Callignee and Traralgon South Cricket Club ($3,000), Combined Gippsland Basketball Association Inc ($9,340), Latrobe Valley Ten Pin Bowling Association ($3,000), Monash Soccer Club ($3,000), Traralgon Table Tennis Association Inc ($3,000) and Morwell Tennis Club ($1,238) on their successful applications.

"Successful applicants can now put this money towards essential equipment and safety gear in a bid to encourage participation in physical activity," Mr Northe said.

"Sport and recreation clubs are a great way to find like-minded people in your community."

Mr Northe said due to a lack of time, lack of confidence, and societal pressures, many Latrobe Valleyresidents just aren’t fitting the recommended amount of physical activity into their week.

"Regular physical activity not only protects against many illnesses, it also makes us mentally healthy, alert and resilient against the stresses of modern life" Mr Northe said.

"Sporting clubs provide a great service to our community and I am delighted to see them receiving some much needed funding."
