Councillor Jeff Amos takes the helm as Wellington’s new Mayor

Wellington Shire Council’s new Mayor is Councillor Jeff Amos from Yarram.

By Wellington Shire Council - 31st March 2004 - Back to News

Councillor Amos, a retired teacher, is relishing his latest challenge which builds on his already extensive involvement in the Shire community. Formerly chairman of the Wellington District Advisory Network, a member of the Apex Sate Board and Vice President of the Tarra Festival Committee, he is currently Secretary of the Yarram Country Club Bowls Section.

He counts sport and education among his many interests - particularly the development of higher education in the Shire. Hobbies include tracing his family history, gardening and dabbling with computers.

Councillor Amos and his wife Glenda have three children.

He was elected Mayor tonight (30 March), during a Special Council Meeting which was webcast live on the Internet. This meant that residents who would otherwise have to travel long distances to attend the occasion were able to watch the proceedings live from their comfort of their own homes.

Recently introduced local government reforms to elections mean that the new Mayor’s term of office will be shorter than the usual one year duration, with the next election due to be held this December.

Said Councillor Jeff Amos on his election as Mayor: "I’m really excited about the challenge of this position. I look forward to working closely with my fellow councillors, the Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Web, Council officers and the local community as we all drive forward to further promote the development of the Shire in all areas.

"I’m confident that by working together we can ensure a prosperous, productive future for Wellington."

Tonight’s meeting also provided the opportunity to elect councillors to various community committees and to set the level of councillors’ allowances for the coming financial year.
