Roundabout Works

Baw Baw Shire Council contractors are completing works to improve traffic flow around the Queen and Smith Street roundabout in Warragul.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 24th April 2006 - Back to News

Council has contracted Sure Constructions to create a dual lane roundabout that will ease traffic congestion in the area.

Works will start at the beginning of May with the majority of works to be completed by the end of June. Final asphalting and paving works will be completed by the end of July.

Council Chief Executive Officer, Mr Glenn Patterson said that the area should be avoided by through traffic whilst works are being undertaken. "Council strongly recommends that through traffic use Gallagher’s Crossing or Nilma to avoid this area whenever possible.

"The nature of the work means that lanes will be narrower and this will cause long waits and unavoidable delays," said Mr Patterson. "Drivers who need to come near this intersection should allow more time for their trip, particularly rail travellers," said Mr Patterson.

The works will be completed between 7:30am and 6:00pm for the three-month period. Total project costs are approximately $320,000.

Suggested alternate routes for through traffic include:

North to South traffic detour via Nilma using:

  • Sutton Street, Copelands Road, No 1 Road, Bloomfield Road and Princes Freeway
  • Sutton Street, Normanby Street, Queen Street and Princes Freeway
  • Albert Street, Normanby Street, Queen Street and Princes Freeway
  • Albert Street, North Road, Queen Street and Princes Freeway

North to South traffic detour via Gallagher's Crossing using:

  • Sutton Street, Latrobe Street, Queen Street, Gallagher's Crossing and Burke Street
  • Sutton Street, Tarwin Street, Queen Street, Gallagher's Crossing and Burke Street
  • Albert Street, Witton Street, Queen Street, Gallagher's Crossing and Burke Street

Vice versa for traffic wanting to travel in the south to north direction.

East to West Traffic detour via Nilma using:

  • Queen Street to Nilma and Princes Freeway

West to East traffic detour via Gallagher's crossing using:

  • Princes Way to Gallagher's Crossing, Burke Street, Princes Freeway and Princes Way from Nilma.
