‘Lost for Words?’ exhibition at GalleryA touring exhibition of works by young men in the custodial juvenile justice system will be presented at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until 12 January. By Latrobe City Council - 17th December 2003 - Back to News Latrobe Regional Gallery’s Director, Louise Tegart said that the exhibition was the result of a unique and exciting partnership between the National Gallery of Victoria Youth Access Project and the Victorian support organisation, Whitelion
"The two organisations have offered young men in custody the opportunity to imagine, express, create and communicate via the visual arts. The touring exhibition is an opportunity for issues faced by young people to be raised and acknowledged. The works also prompt discussion in the arts," Ms Tegart said
Whitelion is a Victorian community-based organisation which aims to connect disadvantaged young people with life-giving opportunities, motivating experiences and valued relationships by providing role modelling, mentoring, employment and other support programs within the juvenile justice system, and through preventative programs in the broader community.
The National Gallery of Victoria’s Youth Access Project is a three-year project funded by the Pratt Foundation. Its role is to administer and implement a range of arts programs, activities and services for marginalised young people not engaged in education or employment
"As well as the touring exhibition, which opened in Melbourne and has also visited Shepparton, the program has included a series of workshops and other opportunities. There have been guided tours of NGV exhibitions, interaction with a diverse range of professionals and volunteers, and opportunities to pursue arts-based practice after being released from custody. This exhibition is a wonderful pathway to community wellbeing, and should be supported," Ms Tegart added.
