Bass Coast Beach FestivalBass Coast Shire Council is encouraging community groups across the Shire to be part of a Beach Festival in 2009. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 8th September 2008 - Back to News A committee is being established to help organise the Festival, which will take place early in 2009. The first meeting will be held on Monday 15 September at 7.30pm, in the Council Chambers, McBride Avenue, Wonthaggi.
John Gemmill from the Bass Coast Boardriders is the driving force behind the concept.
"Bass Coast Boardriders are working with Your Water Your Say to organise a number of community events," said John.
"The aim is to raise awareness of environmental issues and the need to protect our coastline."
The Boardriders group has been motivated by the State Government proposal to build a desalination plant on the coast outside of Wonthaggi.
"We know that there are many people out there who are concerned about the desalination project, who might not feel comfortable being involved with the YWYS action group," said John.
"These might be people in our local footy clubs, mother’s groups, or even walking groups.
"Our idea is to form an umbrella group to assist and promote individual community groups to put events on over the summer, promoting our beautiful coastline and how we want to protect it."
Mr Gemmill said Council was helping to put together the committee, providing a venue for the first meeting and making the community aware of the project.
"While we appreciate the support Council have given us, this festival is not a Council project. It belongs to the community," said John.
"If you have any thoughts, ideas or spare time to be able to assist, then we need you to attend the first meeting on 15 September."

The meeting will be held at the Bass Coast Civic Centre Council Chambers, 76 McBride Avenue (entrance via Baillieu Street), Wonthaggi on Monday 15 September at 7:30pm.
