NEIP committee members tour Morwell RiverMembers of the steering committee for the Morwell River Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan (NEIP) have recently spent a day touring the catchment of the Morwell River. By Latrobe City Council - 1st August 2006 - Back to News The tour was designed to give committee members a first hand knowledge of the issues affecting the river plus an understanding of past and current environmental improvement activities which are taking place along the waterway.
NEIP officer and project co-ordinator, Mike Answerth, said, "Through the NEIP process, the community has the opportunity to work in partnership with industries and government agencies to develop a joint action plan designed to improve the environment within a defined neighbourhood. The committee is currently developing a proposal for a long term, comprehensive management plan for the Morwell River Catchment and is seeking EPA approval and funding to proceed with the plan.
"The Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from the communities of Yinnar, Boolarra, Churchill, Yinnar South and Boolarra South, landowners, Victorian Farmer’s Federation, environmental groups, Latrobe City, Environment Protection Authority, West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, Department of Sustainability and Environment, International Power Hazelwood, Tru Energy Yallourn, and Grand Ridge Plantations," Mr Answerth explained.
"The committee’s itinerary for the recent tour included visits to Morwell Wetlands and to the new Morwell River diversion where they viewed some initial earthworks. Kevin Jones, of International Power Hazelwood, provided an explanation of the wetlands’ purpose and outlined plans for the diversions of the Morwell River and the Prince’s Highway.
"In the afternoon, the group visited both Primrose and Apex parks on the Morwell River Road, viewed willow removal activities carried out by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority and inspected Morwell River Falls. In the upper catchments, committee members were given a close-up look at logging activities and remedial works undertaken by Grand Ridge Plantations.
"The tour was an important step in bringing all committee members up to date with developments on the river and because it is comprised of people representing diverse backgrounds and interests, their participation in the tour was a significant and timely opportunity to gain as much information about the river as possible", Mr. Answerth concluded.
