Black Saturday Bushfire Stories Taken To Parliament Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe last week in Parliament paid tribute to those impacted by the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, and the launch of a book which captures their stories. By Russell Northe - 21st October 2011 - Back to News The book "Beneath Dark Skies" is a compilation of accounts from local residents in the areas of Callignee, Koornalla, Le Roy and Traralgon South who were impacted by the fires which devastated Gippsland.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr Northe said the personal stories from local CFA representatives are conveyed, along with accounts from Government representatives, local community and service organisations are both horrifying and heartening.
Mr Northe presented the Parliament of Victoria with a copy of the book for those wanting to gain an understanding of the impact the events had on residents, before, during and after the fires.
"The book talks about the many aspects of these terrible events, and also pays tribute to the 11 persons who lost their lives in the Churchill complex fires and highlights the emotions of family members who lost loved ones on that fateful day.
"’Beneath Dark Skies’ is an engrossing read complimented by stark and powerful photographs.
"I do commend all those who have conveyed their story as one can only imagine the difficulties in reliving such a horror day and days. The stories vary from pure fear to amazing courage but most of all it describes in many circumstances a neighbour helping a neighbour in their time of need."
Mr Northe also commended Ange Gordon and the Traralgon South & District Community Recovery Committee, the Victorian Bushfire and Reconstruction & Recovery Authority, Ric McFarlane and the Westpac team, along with author Melina Schamroth for their support and dedication in constructing such a compelling book.
"A copy of the book has been donated to the Parliament Library for public consumption and is also for sale through Westpac bank branches.
"It is certainly a captivating read, and I highly encourage the community to grab a copy and find out the stories of the people impacted by the Gippsland Black Saturday bushfires."
