Member for Morwell Russell Northe today joined a number of local cyclists in calling on the State Government to provide funding towards the development of a Traralgon-Morwell shared pathway.

Mr Northe said local residents have long advocated for increased bike path networks and the concept of a Traralgon–Morwell shared pathway has been discussed for many years.

"Prior to the 2010 election I was thrilled to announce that a Coalition Government would provide $60,000 in funding to allow Latrobe City Council to undertake a feasibility study of the proposed pathway and subsequently identify a preferred route," Mr Northe said.

"Latrobe City Council has now endorsed this project and recently submitted a funding application to the Victorian Government through Vic Roads Safer Cyclist and Pedestrians Fund."

Recently in Parliament Mr Northe highlighted the importance of the project to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan and had sought information on the status of Latrobe City Councils funding application to Vic Roads.

Mr Northe said many local bike riders and health enthusiasts have long desired to see the construction of a Traralgon-Morwell shared pathway, including local bike riding group the Traralgon and Morwell Peddallers (TRAMPS).

"A shared pathway will not only provide improved health benefits to local residents, but increase local tourism opportunities and provide a safe pathway for recreational cyclists in our community," Mr Northe said.

"The creation of links between our local towns promotes healthy and active lives are vitally important and I call on the Andrews Government to support this important project.

"We have seen the success of investment in trails such as the Traralgon to Glengarry section of the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail, and likewise the establishment of the Traralgon-Morwell shared pathway would receive enormous use."
