Gippspell is a voluntary project run by Gippsland educators wanting to promote and reward good spelling in the area. Now in its third year and included in Innovation Gippsland for the first time, Gippspell is a Gippsland-wide spelling competition open to all students in Years 5 to 8 in all Gippsland schools. Using the spelling bee format, schools send their best two spellers in each of these year levels to the zone final.
In 2007, the zones are based on the Gippsland local government boundaries, which include East and South Gippsland, Bass Coast, Latrobe City, Baw Baw, Wellington and Cardinia Shires. The winner in each level of the zone final will then compete in the Provincial Final to be held in Traralgon on September 12.
To compete in Gippspell, students in Years 5 to 8 need to ensure their school is registered before June 22nd. For more information and registration details, visit http://www.stpaulswgl.vic.edu.au/Gippspell/Gippspell.htm or follow the link from the St Paul’s website www.stpaulswgl.vic.edu.au.
In 2006 forty-four schools competed, with about 160 students in the various finals. The Gippspell committee is hoping to greatly surpass these numbers in 2007. The winner of the Year 8 division of the Gippsland Provincial Final in 2006, Jake Malouf, went on to win the senior division of a Melbourne-based spelling competition.
Participating schools come from all sectors of Gippsland education. Host schools for the zone finals include government primary schools, a Catholic primary school and two independent schools. This is the only Gippsland-wide spelling competition and is almost alone in providing this opportunity for Victorian students.
Participants receive a certificate to acknowledge their involvement. Winners at the zone and provincial levels will receive beautifully inscribed crystal trophies.
