Meeting of General Purposes Committee moves to evenings

Starting from next Tuesday, 5 August, Wellington Shire Council will be holding its General Purposes Committee (GPC) meetings in the evening, in a move to make Council decisionmaking even more transparent and accessible to the public.

The monthly meetings, which were previously held in the morning, will now start at 6pm, and will be held in the Wellington Room, at the Council’s Port of Sale Civic Centre, 70 Foster Street, Sale. Any members of the Shire community who would like to attend are encouraged to do so and will have the opportunity to comment on agenda items as part of the Council’s normal meeting practice.

Held on the first Tuesday each month, the GPC is a forum where Councillors discuss issues and upcoming Council agenda items with officers, and make recommendations for consideration later in the month at the more formal Council Meeting.

From November the GPC will also be webcast live over the Internet. This facility is already available for the Shire’s Council Meetings, also held in the evening, and is proving highly successful. It is particularly beneficial for Wellington given its large geographical size and means residents who would otherwise have to travel long distances can view the meetings live from the comfort of their homes and participate through the ‘chatroom’.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "We are keen for the decisionmaking process of the Council to be as transparent and accessible to the public as possible. It’s logical that we should hold meetings of the GPC in the evening, which will make it easier for a broader section of the public to attend and make comments to the Councillors if they wish. Indeed the Council meetings themselves are proving very popular, in no small part because of their evening start time. "
