Young Churchill Tenpin Bowler, Andrew Rickell Wins His First Junior Tournament.Young Churchill Tenpin Bowler, Andrew Rickell wins his first Junior Tournament in the "Judy Cloak Shield" at Morwell Tenpins. By news@gippsland - 24th May 2004 - Back to News
The shield named after Judy (Mother) Cloak who has been associated with Morwell Tenpins since the centre first opened. Judy still very active with Junior development at Morwell Tenpins, was very much taken back with the event being named in her honour. Tenpins manager, Joe Tomasinski thought it would be very appropriate to name a Junior tournament after Judy, as she has been the back bone in the centre for over 22 years.
It was quite funny to see Judy coach some of the Juniors whose parents Judy coached many years ago,and were there watching their children bowling in the tournament.
The tournament was sponsored by "Slush Puppie Victoria" and it was pleasing to see twenty three Juniors enter the tournament. Each bowler had to bowl four games with Hcp to advance to the top five final. The final was then contested over two games with Hcp to declare the first winner of the " Judy Cloak Shield".
In the first four games of qualifying the leader board changed several times as the bowlers tried to establish themselves. It was quite noticeable that some of the higher average bowlers were feeling the pressure as they had to give some big starts on Hcp to the younger brigade, which caused some very simple mistakes during their games. But as Judy mentioned to a couple of parents, this is why we have these type of Junior tournaments to allow all the youngsters to feel comfortable bowling with older and or experienced athletes to help them adjust to the pressures of bowling in these events. Even more so, allowing the parents and other family members to see their own competing against some of the best that Morwell Tenpins has to offer, and thereby making them mentally stronger for the next challenge.
The field included young Emma Farnsworth, who earlier in the year won a National tournament at Morwell Tenpins beating some of Australia's and Victoria's best in the graded division, Emma finished 6th one pin from making the cut and found that the tables had turned around for her in a very short time as Emma had to give a lot of the field a start, whereas in January everyone in the field had to give her a start. Sneaking into the top five was Robert Minds, who represented Morwell Boys team last year at Werribee and is very close to becoming one of the top juniors at Morwell. Just missing out was Robert Hillenaar, who was the highest averaged bowler to compete and although Robert finished in seventh place, was only four pins away. Robert is one of the new breed coming through and I am sure that it will not be long before he is representing Morwell Boys team. Heyfield newcomers Adam and his sister Amie Robinson both made the final five and finished 5th and 2nd place, this was Amie's first big event and I am sure that we will see both them backing up in the next tournament.Third pace getter went to another youngster in Kylie Spark who just tired in the last game like Amie and allowed Andrew to win by a mere 8 pins. Andrew has bowled in a few tournaments in the last 18 months and it was a sheer relief for him to finally win a tournament, Andrew is also looking forward to the next tournament and also to making the next jump into the representatives teams. All in all everyone associated with the tournament had a great time, at the end of the event Morwell Tenpins Junior Fund Raising Committee, fired up the BBQ and all competitors were given a free saugage sizzle. The committee was only recently formed by some concerned parents and have set some goals to help send our Junior Representatives teams to compete as far away this year as Mildura. The committee is looking forward to funding several items associated with team expenses. They will be holding a Garage Sale and Trivia night in the next couple of months.Anyone interested in Helping the committee or donating items that could be used for the Garage Sale or Trivia night should contact Sue Jones or Debra Bosma at Morwell Tenpins.
High scratch game of the tournament went to Brendan Hoskin with a 189 but found having to give a start to some of the younger bowlers was a bit hard and he finished in 8th place.
The first three placegetter received a suitable inscribed shield and Mid Valley coins.Courtesy of Slush Puppie Victoria.
