Chemical container collections

Users of farm chemicals in Wellington will be able to take their empty, cleaned, non-returnable farm chemical containers to specially set up collection points in Maffra, Rosedale, Yarram, Stradbroke and Munro later this month for recycling.

By Wellington Shire Council - 3rd March 2004 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council is coordinating the local collections as part of the drumMUSTER program – a nationwide joint initiative by farmers, chemical users, local government, the crop production and animal health industries, to collect and recycle these containers.

The collection centre locations and dates to remember are -

  • Maffra Works Depot, Landy Street - 15 March
  • Rosedale Football Ground - 16 March
  • Yarram Works Depot - 17 March
  • Stradbroke Fire Station - 18 March
  • Munro Hall - 19 March

The opening times for each location will be 9am to 3pm.

Empty plastic and steel containers that will be accepted include those that once held hazardous or non-hazardous products, surfactants, dairy chemicals or liquid fertilisers. It is important that they have been correctly cleaned inside and out (including the threads), and that they have been allowed to drain or air dry to ensure no rinse water remains.

Please note that containers will be rejected if they have not been correctly cleaned, or if they once held petroleum, oil or liquid chlorine.

Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb described the initiative as invaluable in promoting a cleaner environment and safer farming in the shire.

"More containers delivered for recycling means less waste entering landfills," said Lyndon. "The important thing is that the containers must be clean. Those with marks such as dye stains are ok, but any with chemical residue or flakes still pose a potential contamination risk and will be rejected. Collected containers will go on to be processed and recycled into metal and plastic products."

Anyone who would like more information or advice about the drumMUSTER collection days should contact the council’s Stuart Malcolm on 5142 3440.
