Work Underway On Phillip Island Children’S Hub This week saw the first concrete step in the journey to create a Children’s Hub for Phillip Island. By Bass Coast - 28th February 2011 - Back to News Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman and members of the Hub Partnership were on hand to see work on the project begin. The Mayor turned the sod for the roadworks that will provide access to the construction site.
"I was delighted to be present at the start of such an important project for the Phillip Island community," said Cr Dowman.
"The Children’s Hub will provide a range of services under the one roof, which will be a huge benefit for local families."
The Children’s Hub project is a partnership between UnitingCare Gippsland, PICAL (Kid’s House), Phillip Island Kindergarten, Cowes Primary School, Bass Coast Community Health Service and Bass Coast Shire Council.
Long day care, maternal and child health services, three and four year old kindergarten and allied health services will all operate from the Hub, which will be located at the Cowes Primary School site.
ADA Construction Services will carry out the first phase of the project, which involves construction of an access road, a carpark and associated drainage works.
"The roadworks might mean some disruption for pedestrian and vehicle traffic along Settlement Road," advised Cr Dowman.
"ADA Construction Services will make every effort to minimise disruptions to residents, the school, school bus services and drop off areas for parents during the works.
"The site will be securely fenced to make sure that no children can enter the work zone."
Cr Dowman said trees would be cleared as part of the project.
"Once the trees have been cleared, there will be excavation works for the drainage, road and carpark areas," explained Cr Dowman.
"We anticipate that this first phase will be completed by early April, weather permitting. Work will then begin on the actual Hub building."
Construction of the Phillip Island Children’s Hub is being funded by a $2 million commitment from Bass Coast Shire Council and a grant of $1million from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s 2010-11 Children’s Capital Program.
