Bracks’ Speed Camera Cash Register Rings Even LouderLabor’s speed camera cash register rang even louder in the three months of this year in the Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Paynesville, Sale and Stratford areas, Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis said today. By Philip Davis - 31st May 2005 - Back to News Between January and March 2005, Steve Bracks grabbed about $565,000 from local motorists in speed camera fines compared with $470,000 for the same period in 2004, based on no increase in the 2004 average speed camera fine of $152.
"In the local area, the total number of speed camera fines jumped from 3110 to 3733 between the March quarter 2004 and 2005," Mr Davis said.
"The 20 per cent rise in speed camera fines was one of the highest in Victoria’s 23 police regions and in excess of the growth in car registrations or the region’s population."
In January 2005, 1564 speed camera fines were collected compared with 1483 in January 2004.
In February 2005, 974 fines found their way into Steve Bracks’ coffers, compared with 674 in February 2004.
In March 2005, the number of speed camera fines rose to 1195 compared with 953 in March 2004.
"Steve Bracks and his bungling Minister for Transport Peter Batchelor have the cash registers working while the Victorian Parliament’s Road Safety Committee recently criticised Labor’s road safety strategy for failing to take heed of how travelling in rural areas is riskier than in Melbourne," Mr Davis said.
"The jump in speed camera fines also comes as Minister for Police and Emergency Services Tim Holding refuses to reveal the ‘discretionary’ speed camera tolerances that apply today in East Gippsland.
"Steve Bracks said recently that these extra tolerances are only used in ‘unusual’ circumstances – but in a 2004 letter to a Melbourne man, the police said that the enforcement threshold speed was 7km/h more than the posted speed limit.
"Why can’t every Victorian motorist be told this in 2005 when information about what the tolerances were in 2002 was given out previously?
"Victoria is Australia’s most secretive state when it comes to speed cameras.
"But, Steve Bracks’ desire to be Australia’s most money-hungry leader is no secret."
