Poor animal management results in fine

A Latrobe City man whose dogs attacked stock on a neighbouring property has recently been convicted and fined, in excess of $6,000, in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court.

By Latrobe City - 24th February 2015 - Back to News

The local magistrate found the man guilty of breaching the Domestic Animal Management Act and determined that the attacks were serious enough to warrant significant fines.

Latrobe City Council’s manager local laws, Ms Jodie Pitkin, said that Council had become exasperated by the behaviour of the owner.

"The owner was not willing to rectify the issue and displayed little concern to the fact that the attacks were occurring.

"Every opportunity was provided to the owner to justify and fix the issue prior to it being escalated to charges being laid."

Ms Pitkin said that the vast majority of animal owners in Latrobe City do the right thing.

"Our preferred approach is to work in partnership with the community and to support a shared understanding of what it means to be a responsible pet owner in Latrobe City. Where individuals disregard their obligations, we will seek to take action.

"The rules exist for important reasons – including the protection of other people living within the municipality and their animals.

"We recognise that sometimes it can be difficult for community members to understand what is required under the different legislation and we are happy to provide advice and guidance in many circumstances. Our aim is to support responsible and considerate pet ownership – recognising that it has broad benefits for our community".

Information regarding the Domestic Animal Management Act and owner responsibilities can be found on the Latrobe City Council website or by contacting the Local Laws team on 1300 367 700.
