Latrobe City to host Terrapin Puppet Theatre in Moe

Puppets will be brought to life through amazing sound effects and acrobatic storytelling when Tasmania’s Terrapin Puppet Theatre stages their production ‘Boats’ in Latrobe City.

By Latrobe City - 10th September 2010 - Back to News

The puppet show promises to be fun for the whole family; with two shows being staged on Wednesday 15 September at the Moe Town Hall. The first begins at 11am, with the later show at 1.30pm.

Latrobe City Council’s acting arts director, Kathleen Roberts, said that ’Boats’ has acrobatics, physical theatre, object manipulation, story telling, and the wonderful puppetry that Terrapin are renowned for.

"‘Boats’ is classic storytelling where the magic created unfolds in front of the audience. The sound effects for the show are made live through two microphones, one of which goes in water. Each scene contains a unique and highly inventive use of space and puppetry. Some examples include a boat made from a piece of bread and ropes. An island made from a hat. A circus made from a jacket. And a storm made with a teacup.

"‘The story is about a man called Jof as told by his friend Nic. The two of them are life-long friends and sailors. They meet through bizarre circumstances involving a chicken, a deserted island and a sombrero. It is a story of two mariners fleeing their past and embracing adventure. It is a moving story which ultimately tells the story and adventures of Nic and Jof with a twist at the end which will leave a lump in your throat and a smile on your face," Ms Roberts said.

Founded in 1981, Tasmania’s internationally acclaimed Terrapin Puppet Theatre tours locally, nationally and internationally and is recognised as one of the world’s premier puppetry companies.

‘Boats’ is touring regional Victoria from 15 September to 3 October, in association with Regional Arts Victoria. The tour is supported by Playing Australia. For bookings, contact the Latrobe Performing Arts Box Office on 5176 3559.
