Proposed Development For Newhaven

The Old Boys’ Home site in Newhaven has been earmarked for development.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 20th July 2009 - Back to News

An application has been received to convert the existing building into apartments and construct 11 two storey townhouses.

The main building on the site was constructed in 1935 and was the property of the Anglican Church for many years, but is now privately owned.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Planning and Environment Director, Hannah Duncan-Jones, confirmed Council has received an application for the development.

"We expect this application will create a lot of local interest," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

"Our assessment of the application will be thorough and include things like the heritage value of the site, the value of the vegetation and whether the development is in keeping with the area.

"The application proposes demolishing and altering some of the exisiting buildings on the site, to build apartments and townhouses. The land will be subdivided into 22 separate lots.

"It also proposes to remove over 100 plants from the site, which includes about 82 native trees.

Council officers are currently reviewing the application.

"This application will be advertised for public comment later this year," assured Ms Duncan-Jones.

"A report will then be presented to Council with recommendations."

The property is currently privately owned and is zoned residential. All buildings on the site are currently vacant.

"We anticipate many residents will feel strongly about this application and there will be plenty of opportunity for public comment, input and to view the plans when they go on exhibition.

"No decision will be made on this application until this has been done," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

The proposal would see the conversion of the existing main building into five apartments. Part of the building would be demolished to allow for the construction of these apartments and an additional one.

Also proposed are 11 townhouses and ten vacant lots which would be accessed by an internal road.

Many of these lots would back onto the grounds of the Newhaven Secondary College.
