Morwell River Neip Signed OffThe Morwell River Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan (NEIP) was signed off by partners at a special function held at the Latrobe City corporate headquarters today. By Latrobe City Council - 27th June 2007 - Back to News The NEIP includes measures such as removal of willows and exotic vegetation from the stream and revegetation of the stream zone; a strategy for the reduction of litter in riverside parks; the preservation of biodiversity; and the formation of ‘Friends’ groups to take responsibility for parks and reserves along the river.
Welcoming the crowd of partners, senior staff and community members, Latrobe City mayor Cr Tony Zimora said that the event was the conclusion to a great deal of work by the twenty-two partners who had been involved in developing the Plan of Action for the Morwell River.
"The NEIP represents two areas which are a high priority for our council, namely concern for our environment and community engagement," Cr Zimora said.
"With the support of funding from the Environment Protection Authority, council has been able to facilitate this process of community consultation, research and joint action between the various parties involved."
In thanking the partners who participated in the project, Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley said that the NEIP had brought together representatives of government agencies, local industry, environmental groups and local communities to address the issues of concern in relation to the Morwell River waterway and catchment.
He thanked the NEIP Steering Committee which had met on a monthly basis for fifteen months and had spent considerable time on field excursions and inspections.
Frank Donohue of West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority spoke of the contribution of members of the steering committee to the development of the Morwell River Waterway Action Plan.
Community representatives from Boolarra, Churchill and Yinnar also expressed their satisfaction with their involvement in the project.
The NEIP is a three year plan for joint action to address issues of concern to the environment of the Morwell River catchment. It follows the earlier plan developed for the Traralgon Creek through the NEIP process.
