Living Christmas tree to brighten Traralgon CBDBy Latrobe City Council - 30th September 2005 - Back to News When Traralgon’s artificial Christmas tree was vandalised for the third year in a row, the Chamber of Commerce decided enough was enough. Now, a beautiful Norfolk Pine has been planted on the Church Street/Seymour Street roundabout as a permanent living Christmas tree for residents and visitors to admire.
Traralgon Chamber of Commerce spokesperson, Lorraine Paulet said that with the help of funding through Council’s Community Grants scheme the living tree idea had come to fruition.
"The Traralgon Chamber of Commerce originally had the idea to plant a permanent tree. To see the artificial tree vandalised time after time was unpleasant and the traders wanted something for Traralgon residents to admire during the season of goodwill," Ms Paulet explained.
"In order for a tree like this to thrive on a roundabout setting, it was necessary to ensure an adequate water supply was provided. Prior to some already scheduled road surfacing works, Council workers reinstated a water reticulation system to ensure that the tree can be kept in good condition all year round," Ms Paulet said.
Ms Paulet added that the tree would now be around for generations to admire, whatever the season.
"Whilst we may not be able to hang decorations from its branches for Christmas, there will be lighting underneath the tree to highlight its beauty. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also currently considering the feasibility of decorating around the tree or decorating the roundabout.
"Whatever is decided about decorations, the traders are certainly happy that Traralgon now has a living Christmas tree that will grow and flourish for many years, brightening up the CBD," Ms Paulet concluded.
