Asbestos warning

Wellington Shire Council is reminding owners of properties built before 1984 using AC sheeting to approach any renovation work with caution because of the presence of asbestos.

By Wellington Shire Council - 6th February 2004 - Back to News

The warning comes after the council’s Building Surveyor Barry Nicholl averted a potentially hazardous situation last week, after noticing that asbestos was being removed from a house without proper precautions being taken.

Said Mr Nicholl: "Exposure to asbestos can be harmful to health and potentially deadly. Homes built before 1984 using AC sheeting will contain some asbestos. If it’s left undisturbed there should be no problem. However it’s important that all appropriate care be taken if disturbing the material.

"In light of this, those looking to renovate such properties must employ a registered asbestos removalist to ensure the sheeting is removed properly and safely."

For advice please contact Barry Nicholl direct on 5142 3414, or the Asbestos Information and Support Service on 9654 9555.
