Attend the convention and shape the future

Read the projection indications for Phillip Island and San Remo surrounds...

Did you know that projections indicate that by 2011 Phillip Island, San Remo and surrounds will have:

• a population of 10,000 permanent residents?
• 3.2 million visitors to the Island and surrounds annually, which is an increase of 1 million people on existing visitor numbers?

It is also projected that retailers and traders will be able to draw on an estimated $310 million in visitor expenditure annually.

An increase in both the permanent population and visitor numbers means that the Phillip Island and San Remo areas are likely to experience increasing pressure for development. The Phillip Island and San Remo Design Framework Project aims to ensure that any future development is of a high standard and meets the aspirations of the wider community.

Over the past two months residents, traders, councillors, visitors and part-time residents, as well as members of a variety of local community groups have enthusiastically participated in a series of focus group discussions. These discussions have raised a variety of important issues that face Phillip Island and San Remo.

The next step in the Project is the Phillip Island & San Remo Convention on 8 December at the Cowes Cultural Centre from 9am-3.30pm.

Cr Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council, said that the Convention would be an enjoyable, fun event that focuses on developing the future vision of Phillip Island and San Remo and everyone was welcome to attend.

"The key objectives of the Convention are to explore and confirm a vision for the Island and San Remo and explore creative ways of making this vision a reality during the next 10 - 15 years," said Cr Sage.

The project team will present images, graphics and words to encourage participants in this forum to " think outside the square". People will be encouraged to join in an open discussion about the aspirations of the community as a whole.

Cr Sage emphasised the importance of the community participating in this convention.

"I urge people to come along to the convention as it is a tremendous opportunity for the community to participate in and influence the future of Phillip Island and San Remo," said Cr Sage. "It’s a chance to share and discuss ideas in a fun way."

"Please do not miss this wonderful opportunity to help create the future," she said. "It would be terrific to see the Cowes Cultural Centre full of people who are ready and willing to participate."

The Convention will be held at the Cowes Cultural Centre on 8 December from 9.00am to 3.30 pm.
