Latrobe Valley urged to get behind Support Small Business Day

Minister for Small Business and Member for Morwell Russell Northe today called on Latrobe Valley small business operators and local residents to participate in Support Small Business Day, to be held on 4 October, 2014.

Speaking at one of Support Small Business Day’s local heroes Viva Bags and Shoes in Morwell, Mr Northe urged businesses to register at www.supportsmallbusinessday.com.au and said the event reflects the importance of the sector to the Victorian economy.

"Small businesses make up 96 per cent of all Victorian businesses, provide 1.2 million jobs and generate 30 per cent of the state's output and sales," Mr Northe said.

"Sandra McPhie’s thriving business is a testament to hard work, initiative and exemplary customer service, the values that underpin any successful small business.

"On the back of last year’s inaugural event, Support Small Business Day will once again celebrate the immense difference that businesses such as this make to our local communities.

"Encouraging Victorians to purchase from small retail operators such as Viva Bags and Shoes, drives product diversity and innovation, helps create jobs and builds stronger neighbourhoods.

"In fact, our research has shown that when $100 is spent in a local small business, $50 is retained in the local economy."

As part of the day Victorians have a chance to win gift cards that can be spent at participating businesses. There are thousands of gift cards up to $100 to be won, provided by Principal Partner Bendigo Bank.

Shoppers who make a purchase at a participating local business and post a photo on social media of themselves with the purchase will also be in the running to win one of three $100 gift vouchers.

Mr Northe added that consumers are also able to join the many interactive social media activities for the chance to receive incentive offerings that can be used on 4 October.

"The benefits to both consumers and small business operators are therefore immense and reinforce our commitment to supporting local communities, boosting trade and creating jobs."

To participate, businesses, shoppers and local councils across the state can register at www.supportsmallbusinessday.vic.gov.au.
