Wastewater Forums a resounding success

Two wastewater forums held last week were well received by their intended target markets: the relevant corporate stakeholders and the local community groups and individuals.

" It is Council’s intention to keep all parties informed as we work our way through the complexities of these issues," said the Mayor, Cr Heather Bligh. "Whilst we don’t have the solutions yet, we have at least begun the journey."

Several companies marketing innovative wastewater technologies provided information and displays at the Launch.

Thirty corporate stakeholders attended the Briefing held in Traralgon on Thursday, representing the MAV, ACC, regional Water Boards, Catchment Management Authorities, Gippsland Councils, the EPA and the Gippsland Coastal Board.

National and international consultants who contributed to Stage 1 of the Study

" Wastewater Management in coastal settlements of Gippsland" which was launched on Friday, addressed the stakeholders on Thursday on the following issues:

  • Mr Jim Smith, In Focus Management: Overview of the project, the issues and the management model
  • Mr John Lawrie, EWS Environmental: Highly permeable soils- Issues and Management approaches
  • Mr Neil Dunbar, Water Date Management Services: Information Management- Monitoring performance
  • Mr David Sutcliffe, HDS (Australia): Septic Tank Effluent Disposal Systems (STEDS)
  • Mr Bill Kelly, CRS Industrial Water Treatment Systems P/L: International approaches to effluent treatment

What evolved from the briefing was a firm commitment from stakeholders to work together to overcome the inherent obstacles in future wastewater management. It was generally conceded that the costs and problems would only exacerbate if not addressed in the short term.
