Guidelines For Burning Off

Bass Coast Shire Council with the CFA has produced a set of burning off guidelines for the safety and convenience of residents.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th April 2009 - Back to News

Council’s Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, Kaye Hall, said that even though we were almost at the end of the fire danger period, there are still requirements that need to be met for burning off throughout the year.

"The burning off guidelines apply to open air burning on rural land on days out of the fire danger period, or days when there is not a total fire ban," said Ms Hall.

CFA Group Officer, Damien O’Connor, said the guidelines contain important information.

"They include vital things such as ensuring you have sufficient water on site and that you have cleared an appropriate fire break," said Mr O’Connor.

"It is also common courtesy to let your neighbours know that you are burning off, so they don’t get worried. Make sure you contact Vic Fire, so you don’t get a fire truck turning up at your property and risk a fine."

Vic Fire can be contacted on 9887 7766.

Ms Hall said the burning off guidelines could be accessed on Council’s website or were available from any Council Customer Service Centre or the CFA.

"It’s important for property owners to be aware of the guidelines and ensure they stick to them when burning off. The guidelines operate in conjunction with Council’s General Local Law," explained Ms Hall.

"I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind residents living in residential areas that burning off is not permitted at any time without the consent of a Council Community Safety Ranger."
