Safety works for Island intersection

Bass Coast Shire Council has appointed SR Excavations to undertake safety improvement works on the Smiths Beach Road and Back Beach Road intersection in Smiths Beach.

By Portal Admin - 19th June 2017 - Back to News

The $40,000 project has been fully funded by Council as part of its Capital Works program for 2016/2017.

The works involves the installation of rumble strips on the north and south sides of the intersection to warn drivers of the approaching intersection, preparing them to slow down or stop.

Installation of appropriate signs and line marking will also be undertaken. It is noted that some parking spaces close to the intersection will be removed for the purpose of providing sufficient lane widths for southbound through traffic.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said the works were being done in response to community concern after a number of accidents, including a fatal accident, at the intersection.

"These works will make all drivers – especially those not familiar with our roads – aware they are approaching the Smiths Beach Road and Back Beach Road intersection, with the aim of reducing accidents due to driver inattention," Cr Rothfield said.

"These road works are important in ensuring our local road network is safe and sustainable for our community both now and into the future."

These works are anticipated to be completed by Friday, 23 June weather permitting.

There will be changes in traffic movements, including minor lane closures controlled by traffic controllers and a worksite speed restriction of 40 km/hr. Please obey all traffic control measures onsite.
