Labor must end uncertainty in Latrobe Valley greyhound industryFinal report for greyhound industry should end uncertainty. By Portal Admin - 30th December 2017 - Back to News The Andrews Labor Government must not wait until the cover of the busy Christmas holiday period to release its plans for reform in the greyhound industry.
When the draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds was released in June many greyhound industry stakeholders said it was overreach and would force them out of business.
Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said Labor must release the Code this week.
"Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club is a great asset to our community, creating job opportunities and bringing visitors into the Latrobe Valley," Ms Bath said.
"Our community wants a greyhound industry that adheres to the highest standards, but many are concerned the draft Code will force legitimate and ethical owners out of business.
"The Andrews Government’s draft reforms appeared to be overreach and a banning of the industry by stealth. The industry needs certainty and Labor must end its delays and release the final report before Christmas."
Submissions on the draft Code of Practice closed four months ago, but Labor has not detailed the outcome of this process.
Shadow Minister for Racing Tim Bull said many of the 1200 submissions outlined major concerns that will force them out of the industry unless significant changes were made.
"Labor’s silence on these reforms is the last thing on the greyhound industry’s Christmas wishlist,"
Mr Bull said.
"The Agriculture Minister has stressed several times that the original document was ‘only a draft’, while the Racing Minster has said ‘no changes will threaten the viability of the industry’, but for that to happen this document must change significantly.
"It’s time the Andrews Labor Government released its final report to end this uncertainty and give the industry confidence around its future."
