Origami house to be built for exhibition

For two days in February, the Latrobe Regional Gallery will be transformed into a building site where hundreds of origami bricks and domestic items will be made by participants in a workshop with the aim of building the Origami House.

Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that the free workshops would be held on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 February from 3pm to 5pm and are open to everyone interested in taking part.

"Participants will work in teams with the Melbourne Origami Group, learning folding patterns to create bricks and domestic items. By constructing the house participants will individually contribute to and be a part of a unique art installation that will remain on exhibition at the Gallery until April 2005," Ms Tegart explained.

"The Origami House will be a life size origami cubby house measuring 3m by 3m, built with modular origami bricks, and roofed with origami tiles. We have invited local schoolchildren to take part in the construction program so they will learn from some of Victoria’s best folders about the techniques of origami.

"Any other members of the community who are interested in taking part are invited to join in," Ms Tegart said.

Ms Tegart added that from 8 to10 April 2005 in association with the Melbourne Origami Group, Latrobe Regional Gallery would host ‘Folding Australia 2005’.

"This is Australia's first international origami convention. We are delighted that the Gallery is to host this convention and the construction of the Origami House will add a nice touch," Ms Tegart concluded.

The Origami House will be on display at Latrobe Regional Gallery from 5 March until 10 April.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed on Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
