2005 Great Endeavour RallyWellington people love their libraries as can be seen by the huge demand for more hours at the Stratford and Heyfield branches. By Wellington Shire Council - 13th July 2005 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council has heard the call and responded by opening both libraries for 21 hours a week, including Saturday mornings. It is the first time Wellington’s smaller libraries have opened of a weekend.
Stratford Library’s extended hours started on 11 July and the branch is now open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-1.30pm and 3-6pm plus Saturdays from 10am-noon.
Heyfield Library’s new hours start on Monday 1 August and it will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-noon and 2pm-6pm as well as Saturdays from 10am-noon.
Wellington’s Deputy Mayor Jeff Amos said: "We are responding to increased community demand for the library services at Heyfield and Stratford and each of the branches will be open for an extra six hours a week.
"We have a brand new library at the Heyfield Hub and now that the community has got such a great new facility they want to use it more often. Stratford is a similar size town to Heyfield and its library also has high usage, especially from the local schools."
Cr Amos said public surveys were used to decide the best mix of new hours to suit community needs.
"The Saturday morning opening will provide more opportunities for those who work full-time to borrow information or recreational resources from their local library, and would be a good time for families to visit the libraries together."
Wellington’s Cultural Services Manager Stephen Dempsey said: "The increase in opening hours will provide better community access to the book, audio-visual resources and internet facilities at these libraries."
The Council allocated the extended library hours when it formally adopted the Budget on 21 June.
