Diverse program for this year's Latrobe City Literary FestivalFollowing last year’s sell-out success, the second annual Latrobe City Literary Festival is taking place from 23 to 28 May this year across the Traralgon and Moe Libraries. By Portal Admin - 23rd May 2017 - Back to News The program of workshops and author talks is designed to delight and inspire readers and writers of all ages, presenting opportunities to network, learn and listen to published authors talk about the craft.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said last year we were overwhelmed by the number of participants who were already talking about ‘next time’ before they left.
"This year’s program includes a children’s program with Stig Wemyss, renowned audio book narrator. He is the voice of Andy Griffiths' Treehouse series and his interactive author talks will show young readers that story-telling can be a performance art, not just a paper-based job.
"For creatively-minded young adults, the Latrobe Regional Gallery will be running a masterclass for repurposing book pages. This class will explore a variety of writing, drawing and collage techniques, design elements and drawing materials through overdrawing, black out poetry, silhouettes and cutouts," Cr O’Callaghan said.
"Three workshops for adults are offered this year. Listen to Writers Victoria’s Nic Brasch as he runs a session on the art of criticism, a vital aspect of producing good writing. And creative writers can also choose between a memoir writing session tutored by Alice Pung or a short story workshop presented by Wayne Macauley. All these presenters are experienced, published authors.
"For the author presentations, four writers will read from their latest works and talk about their writing processes. The program features Melbourne-based authors, Paul Mitchell and Dorothy Johnston as well as Gippsland authors, Scot Gardner and Margareta Osborn. There will be opportunities to buy books and have them signed," Cr O’Callaghan said.
During the author sessions, the winners of the Friends of the Latrobe City Libraries short story and poetry competition will be announced.
