Thingle Toodle to help launch pre-school road safety drive

VicRoads road safety character Thingle Toodle will be on hand to help Wellington Shire Council and local kindergarten students officially launch a road safety initiative targeted at pre-school children on Wednesday 29 October.

By Wellington Shire Council - 21st October 2003 - Back to News

The aim of the statewide Starting Out Safely program is to increase awareness of the importance of road safety with the help of fun activities and books.

Central to its successful implementation are kindergarten staff. All the Shire’s nine kindergartens have signed up to the initiative, and three of these* have already been putting it through its paces.

On Wednesday 29 October at 2pm there will be a formal launch of the program in the Wellington Room, at the Council’s main offices in Foster Street, Sale. The Mayor will present the Kindergartens with a Starting Out Safely teaching kit that includes activity sheets and books, ideas for monitoring children’s progress and a cassette/CD of road safety songs. Also attending will be some kindergarten pupils and Thingle Toodle.

The pack material is designed to:

  • help children develop an awareness and understanding of the road and traffic environment and a sense of danger;
  • help them develop and use their road safety skills (supervised) as pedestrians, passengers and when playing;
  • encourage children to reflect on their real world traffic experiences.

One challenge set the children is to teach forgetful Thingle Toodle about the do’s and don’ts of road safety.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Fortunately we do not have a serious problem with children and road safety in the Shire and we aim to keep it that way. The Starting Out Safely program is a very welcome initiative and we are delighted with the support shown by our kindergartens who have shown great enthusiasm for the project."
