Postponement of Sister Cities FestivalSister Cities Festival postponed. By Portal Admin - 19th March 2020 - Back to News Latrobe City Council has made the difficult decision to postpone this month’s Sister Cities Festival which was scheduled to take place on Friday 20 March.
Latrobe City Council’s decision follows news that similar festivals and events held in past weeks had drawn low numbers.
Fast becoming known as a regional event destination, Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Dan Clancey said the decision to postpone the event wasn’t taken lightly.
"Latrobe City is known for delivering great events, we are proud of the calibre of events that we deliver for our community and those beyond Gippsland’s regional city. We want to ensure that we have maximum attendance, under the current environment this may not be possible," Cr Clancey said.
"What has been evidenced in past weeks is that many major events have seen a significant reduction in attendee numbers. We have consulted with our stakeholders and have concluded that it is in the best interests of marking this significant milestone, celebrating 20 years of collaboration with our sister city relationships with Takasago in Japan and Taizhou in China that we postpone.
"We understand that many will be disappointed by the decision however we are committed to rescheduling the festival and are exploring options for a spring celebration."
The Sister Cities Festival, which forms part of Council’s International Relations Program, is a celebration of Latrobe City’s two sister city relationships and is aimed to not only enrich Latrobe City’s culture, but open the region up on an international stage. The sister city partnerships provide Latrobe City with a platform to demonstrate internationally what the region has to offer by way of trade and tourism.
"We are working with participating vendors and community groups, and hope that they will be able to take part in what we are planning will be a bigger and better festival that celebrates 20 years of partnership and collaboration.
