All rural properties get a road number

Wellington Shire Council has just completed the allocation of road numbers to some 4,500 rural properties spread across the shire – primarily for emergency purposes.

By Wellington Shire Council - 26th April 2004 - Back to News

Over the coming weeks letters are being issued to those property owners affected, confirming their new details. The new rural road number is the property address that consists of a number, the road name and the locality. Residents will still be able to include their property’s name in the address.

The road numbers have been allocated in a logical, sequential way, making it much easier for ambulances, the CFA, SES and police to find a property and respond to an emergency. In addition the system will make it easier for visitors to find properties and should help with more efficient delivery of goods and mail, as well as improved services from the council and utility companies.

On behalf of residents the council is passing on the new address details to the CFA, SES, Victoria Police, Rural Ambulance Victoria, Australia Post, Telstra, Gippsland Water, the State and Federal Electoral Commissions, water, electricity and gas companies.

Due to database changes that need to be made by Australia Post, residents should NOT start using this address for postal purposes until they have been advised directly by Australia Post that they can do so.

Anyone with a query about their rural address can call Wellington Shire Council on 1300 366 244. Those with enquiries about the use of their rural address for mail delivery should contact their local post office or the Australia Post Customer Contact Centre on 13 13 18.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "This far-reaching initiative promises significant benefits to all those rural property owners affected, and the community as a whole, not least in terms of helping ensure rapid responses to emergencies and in the delivery of council and other services.

"We thank residents for bearing with us. The allocation of new road numbers to thousands of rural properties across the shire has been a mammoth task. We appreciate the painstaking work and commitment put in by the council staff involved, along with the cooperation and support received from the CFA, Victorian Police, SES, Rural Ambulance Victoria and other service providers."
