Shadow Minister Visit puts Spotlight on Valley Sport and VeteransSheridan Bond focused the needs of grassroots sports clubs in the Latrobe Valley. By Portal Admin - 29th July 2018 - Back to News The Nationals candidate for Morwell, Sheridan Bond, is focusing heavily on the needs of grassroots sports clubs in the Latrobe Valley.
Ms Bond recently invited Shadow Minister for Sport, Veterans, Liquor and Gambling Regulation, Danny O’Brien to visit a number of locations in the Latrobe Valley including Yallourn Yallourn North Football Netball Club, Traralgon RSL and Traralgon Skate Park.
"Community sporting facilities such as the netball courts at Yallourn Yallourn North Football Netball Club are in dire need of an upgrade," Ms Bond said.
"I visited these courts a little over a month ago and I was appalled at the poor state of the facilities. Netball players and officials are having to change in a tiny Atco hut and use a port-a-loo instead of having proper toilet. I showed Mr O’Brien there was no lighting in the toilet or Atco hut meaning the girls have to take a torch or use their phone when they need to use the facilities at training.
"The Yallourn Yallourn North Football Netball Club netball facilities are probably the worst in the Mid Gippsland competition and I felt it was important that the Shadow Minister for Sport see what the netball players and officials at the club have to put up with.
"The Valley visit was also an opportunity to show Mr O’Brien the Traralgon Skate Park, which is the subject of a concerted campaign by local children and parents to rebuild and relocate," said Ms Bond.
Ms Bond and Mr O’Brien also met with local veterans to discuss rising power prices on local RSL Clubs and other local community groups and businesses.
Mr O’Brien said being born and raised in the Latrobe Valley he understands the importance of local sport and recreational activity to the community.
"I couldn’t believe the facilities that the Yallourn Yallourn North girls are having to put up with. There are many grass sports facilities in need of an upgrade and yet the Andrews Labor Government has got its priorities all wrong by handing a $225 million free kick to the AFL instead of focusing on grass roots sport.
"Sheridan Bond highlighted to me the importance of each of these facilities to their respective communities and I was very pleased to meet with the users and view their facilities first hand," said Mr O’Brien.
