Member for Morwell Russell Northe is calling on the State Labor Government to provide funding for the redevelopment of Latrobe Special Development School (SDS) in the upcoming State Budget.

Mr Northe said that Latrobe SDS and the local community were hopeful that the school would receive funding given announcements made by the Government yesterday.

"It appears that seven regional specialist schools are in line for funding and I call upon the Andrews Labor Government to ensure Latrobe SDS is one of those schools," Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe said many students have high needs and use specialised equipment and it is simply not good enough that they are subjected to poor conditions.

"Staff at Latrobe SDS go above and beyond for students and deserve to be supported with first class teaching facilities," Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe has visited the school regularly, and has seen firsthand a number of classrooms that are simply not adequate for teachers or students.

"In addition the facilities for staff are not only difficult to access but extremely cramped," he said.

Mr Northe recently invited the Shadow Minister for Education, Nick Wakeling to visit the school and he likewise expressed concerns on the standard of class rooms and staff facilities.

"A redevelopment of the School would provide better education outcomes for students, teachers and parents."

Member for Eastern Victoria Region Melina Bath said it is essential that children with disabilities, who in many cases already have so many more hills to climb in regard to education, can enjoy a schooling environment that is innovative and caters for their specific needs.

"I hope the wonderful teachers and students at Latrobe Special Development School do not miss out on the opportunity for Government funding to ensure our students are provided with the facilities they deserve," Ms Bath said.

The budget is due to be handed down on Wednesday 27 April.
