‘Swish’ On The Table At Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough

People who are blind or have low vision can now actively participate in the game of swish at Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough, as a result of a partnership with Vision Australia, GippSport and Keenagers Moe Newborough.

By Latrobe City - 6th October 2010 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s rural access worker, Bill Lawler said that swish was a game similar to table tennis where a ball with bells inside is hit along a table and under a wooden partition.

"The bells in the ball enable people who are blind or have low vision to hear where the ball is. The wooden partition prevents players who have some sight from seeing where the ball is until it passes under the net, thus evening up the competition for people who have no sight," Mr Lawler explained.

"The location of a swish table at Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough came about under the leadership of Lynn Lancaster, Recreation Development Worker at Vision Australia. Lynn approached Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough with the idea and then brought Keenagers Moe Newborough and GippSport into the partnership. GippSport provided funding for a local tradesman to design and construct the folding swish table.

"There are plans to locate swish tables throughout Gippsland and possibly develop a competition using the Keenagers club network," Mr Lawler concluded.
