Peri Urban Councils Victoria outlines Federal Budget priorities for housing, digital and transport infrastructure growth

Peri Urban Councils Victoria Chair Moira Berry is available Tuesday 12 May to discuss budget priorities, including housing infrastructure, digital connectivity and transport solutions for fast-growing regional communities.

PUCV's 2026-27 Pre-Budget Submission focuses on:

  • Enabling Infrastructure: delivering housing-ready communities
  • Digital Connectivity: fixing grey spots and strengthening resilience
  • Transport Connectivity: modern, flexible public transport for fast-growing communities

About Peri Urban Councils Victoria

PUCV is an alliance of five municipalities located immediately adjacent to metropolitan Melbourne and Geelong. They are: Surf Coast, Golden Plains, Moorabool, Baw Baw and Bass Coast. These municipalities cover more than 11,000 square kilometres and have a population of nearly 200,000 people

Growth

  • Member regions are expected to grow by almost 50% or more than 100,000 by 2036
  • COVID exodus means that this figure will be reached much sooner
  • Centre for Population's Regional Internal Migration Estimates, which highlighted that the 12 months to March 2021, 43 per cent of those leaving Melbourne settled in regional Victoria
  • More than 38,000 across the peri urban region commute to employment outside of the region with the population almost doubling during the holiday season

Economy

  • Generates more than $5.3 billion of Gross Regional Product annually
  • Is home to industries that include agriculture, dairy product manufacturing, beverage and malt manufacturing, construction, construction material mining, food processing, timber, wholesale trade and tourism
