In A grade Churchill travelled to Traralgon to take on the Redsox. It was the first game played on the newly realigned diamond, utilising the new back net, which was a credit to all involved in its development. Right from the outset Traralgon set the tone as Brad Pratt was pitching with great control and sent the first three batters back to the dugout. When it came Traralgon’s time to bat they pushed ahead scoring seven runs using eleven batters. Mark Seeber and Owen Godenzi hit huge home runs. Churchill slowed Traralgon’s scoring rate with a change of pitcher but it was all too late. Great fielding by the Redsox saw them 10 runs up at the end of the seventh innings. The Redsox eventually won the game 12-2 in a strong team performance. Among the best players for the Redsox were Mark Seeber, Brad Pratt and Ross Brooker.
The B grade game was a battle between the top two teams. The game was played in sunny conditions in front of an excited crowd. The Braves ended Traralgon’s unbeaten run with an impressive 7-3 victory. The game started on a positive high, with a double play to make the first outs. The scores were kept low and close until the top of the fifth when Traralgon faltered under the pressure and the Braves took advantage of errors in the field to score five runs. For Traralgon Luke Hornsta did a sterling job on the mound, pitching the whole game. Other top performers were Jude Power And Wayne Beams. The C grade game was a high scoring affair that the Redsox prevailed in 16-11. A collision between Matt Toms and a Churchill runner caused Toms to sit out the rest of the game due to injury. Best players for the Redsox were Steve O’Callaghan and Steve Cox while for the Braves it was a consistent team performance.
The under 18 game Traralgon easily accounted for the Braves as Luke Hornsta and Steve Cox had three hits each. Steve Cox continued his good form on the mound with seven strikeouts for three innings while Rhys Gray had five strikeouts in only two innings pitched. The highlights for the under 14’s game were the home runs hit by both sides. Matt McLean hit a homer and a double for the Redsox but it wasn’t enough as the Braves won 12-9. Churchill also went on to take the under 12 game in a spirited contest. For the Redsox Kyle grass, Joseph Neave and felicity Graham were solid contributors.
This Sunday the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association season continues with round five action. This week’s games see the Morwell Cougars take on Yarram; Moe/Newborough Dodgers does battle with the Traralgon Redsox and the Churchill Braves host the Sale Rangers. So come down to the grounds for a taste of the best baseball action the Latrobe Valley has to offer.
