A Latrobe citizen who has devoted most of his life to providing solutions for people with a disability, was presented with Latrobe City’s ‘Senior Citizen of the Year’ award at the opening concert for this year’s Senior Citizens Festival, in Victory Park on Sunday.
Mr Ron Court was congratulated and presented with his award by Councillor Peter Tyler in a ceremony where five other citizens were presented with recognition certificates for their dedication and commitment to the community.
Mr Court was born in 1921 and was a foundation member of TADVIC Gippsland (Technical Aid for the Disabled Victoria), which covers an area from Drouin to Rosedale. He is currently the Gippsland Co-ordinator for TADVIC.
Mr Court was a former SECV Engineer at Hazelwood Power Station, and Cr Tyler said his expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering had been applied to the design and manufacture of a number of solutions to enable the disabled greater access to the utilities of daily life.
Mr Court is a life member and Commodore of the Latrobe Valley Yacht Club and was a chairman of the former Collins Street Primary School in Morwell. He is also a steering member and keen worker for Sailability, the sailing for the disabled program.
He has also served as president of LV Birthright and counsellor to Birthright families, and was the first president of Yallourn W Social Club.
The five other nominations for Senior Citizen of the year who each received a Recognition Certificate, were Mavis Coleman, Valda Cooper, Betty Flett, Stan Wright, and Darrell Benjamin.
