Gippsland › Latest news › Latrobe Local NewsAustralia Day to be celebrated throughout LatrobeNews of Latrobe City’s celebrations for Australia Day 2003 Latrobe City’s celebrations for Australia Day 2003 will commence early on 26 January, with free barbeques and flag raising ceremonies being held across the municipality on the Sunday morning. Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, has urged citizens to attend one of the community barbeques and join with others in the community, celebrating Australia’s national day with music and fun; and to ‘fly the flag’ on Australia Day, in shops and homes, in celebration. The free Australia Day barbeque breakfasts and celebrations will be held at the following locations: CHURCHILL - West Place Shopping Centre - Community Barbecue and flag raising ceremony commencing 8am MOE - Gippsland Heritage Park - Community Barbecue and flag raising ceremony commencing 8am until 10am (There will be free entry to the Park for the morning celebrations) MORWELL - Town Common/Community Playground - Community Barbecue commencing 8.30am until 10am. Flag raising ceremony at Morwell RSL commencing 8.30am. TRARALGON - Victory Park: Community Barbecue commencing 8am with flag raising ceremony at 9am concludes at 10am. Activities continue throughout the morning TOONGABBIE - Toongabbie Mechanics Building: Community Barbecue and flag raising commencing 8.30am YALLOURN NORTH - Lions Park Yallourn North: Community Barbecue Commencing 7am with flag raising ceremony at 8am NEWBOROUGH - Henry White Reserve: Community Barbecue and Australiana activities commencing 10.30am Cr Hanning advised those attending any of the breakfasts to take along a folding chair and/or blanket, advising that it would help to make Australia Day a more enjoyable experience for all citizens and visitors. One of the highlights of Australia Day will be Latrobe City’s Civic Celebration being held at Kernot Hall, Morwell at 1pm. Eighteen Latrobe citizens from seven different cultural background including the United Kingdom, Italy, China, Thailand, The Netherlands and India will be presented with their Australian Citizenship certificates at this year’s Australia Day Citizenship ceremony. The presentation of Latrobe City’s Australia Day Awards will also feature at the Civic Celebration. The names of the recipients of the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year, are withheld until the official revelation on the day, so the announcement of this year’s Australia Day Award recipients will be a closely watched event. Once again, there is free admission to the Civic Celebration at Kernot Hall, and Cr Hanning has urged Latrobe Citizens to attend. Entertainment will be provided by the Latrobe City Youth Band during the Civic Celebration. It will be their first official public performance of the Latrobe City Youth Band in the lead up to its tour of Latrobe’s Sister Cities of Takasago in Japan and Taizhou in China, in April this year. The City’s young ambassadors will delight citizens with a program of specially selected Australian music throughout the afternoon. The Edison Mission Energy Australia Day Heart Walk will be a feature of the Traralgon celebration, with the Latrobe Community Health Service inviting citizens to participate in a 5.5 kilometre or 1.4 kilometre walk, starting at 9.30am from Victory Park. Latrobe City has also announced that there will be free entry to Council’s three outdoor pools on Australia Day, with a family fun day commencing 12 noon with various planned activities. A barbecue will be held at each venue with barbecue food at a nominal cost. The Moe, Yallourn North and Traralgon outdoor swimming pools will each be open until 6pm, subject to the normal conditions for extended hours in the evening if the weather on Australia Day turns out to be hot. "This is an opportunity for everyone in Latrobe to enjoy three of the community’s best facilities absolutely free. Perhaps Australia Day is the perfect time for this to happen, as it is traditionally a time when many of us take time out to relax and reflect on the freedom and opportunities we are able to enjoy as Australians," Cr Hanning said.
