Rosedale Residents Urged To Join Battle Against BeetlePurple Leaf Elms in Lyons Street under significant threat from the beetle pest By Karen Gregory - 29th October 2002 - Back to News Residents of Rosedale are being encouraged to join Wellington Shire Council in the battle against the Elm Leaf Beetle.
Rosedale has a superb avenue of National Trust registered Purple Leaf Elms in Lyons Street under significant threat from the beetle pest.
Operations Planner Martin Norris said there had been a rapid increase in beetle infestation across Wellington Shire over the past two seasons.
"There are no easy control solutions to Elm Leaf Beetles, but by far the best approach is for a Council-Community effort to eliminate them from the town and to monitor for reinfestation.
"We want to gather a register of elms in the town, both privately and publicly owned, inspect and recommend treatment for each tree.
"This could include removal of elms in poor condition or elm sucker populations, through to ground injection of a systemic insecticide for valuable trees.
Mr Norris said strong community involvement was vital for the success of this trial program.
"Working together for a common cause will do more to save Rosedale’s elms than by trying to go it alone.
"Council has committed funds this year to tackle the problem of the Elm Leaf Beetle at no direct cost to trial participants."
"To start this process we would like residents of Rosedale to register their elms with us. "
Contact Martin Norris 51423416 or Peter Keogh 51423399 at Wellington Shire Council to register your trees.
